Brand-new James Bond videogame in the works as an origin story

Project 007 will tell a “wholly original” origin story from the developers of Hitman.

James Bond is making his triumphant return to videogames.

Thursday brought the announcement that a new “wholly original” Bond story will be told on gaming consoles and computer screeners in the upcoming Project 007 (a working title), described as “the very first James Bond origin story.” A teaser video, locked and loaded with 007 imagery, was also released.

IO Interactive, the developers of the Hitman assassin games, including this January’s Hitman 3, are working on Project 007 in collaboration with MGM, EON Productions, and Delphi.

“It’s true that once in a while, the stars do align in our industry,” Hakan Abrak, CEO of IO Interactive, said in a statement. “Creating an original Bond game is a monumental undertaking and I truly believe that IO Interactive, working closely with our creative partners at EON and MGM, can deliver something extremely special for our players and communities. Our passionate team is excited to unleash their creativity into the iconic James Bond universe and craft the most ambitious game in the history of our studio.”

Robert Marick, MGM’s Executive Vice President Global Consumer Products and Experiences, made note of “some of the most iconic games of all-time based on the character.” The first Bond game goes back to 1983 with James Bond 007, but 1997’s GoldenEye 007 offered a new kind of popularity for the gaming franchise. There’s been a glaring lack of Bond games since Activision’s release of 007 Legends in 2012, which followed with a downloadable Skyfall-inspired mission.

“Working with our partners at EON and the talented team at IO Interactive, we plan to bring a new take on this legendary franchise to gamers and Bond fans around the world,” Marick said. “IO Interactive are masters of crafting living, breathing worlds of immersive storytelling.”

Meanwhile, No Time to Die, the latest Bond movie with Daniel Craigas 007, is scheduled for theaters on April 2, 2021.
