With the right tools and techniques, you can create on-screen activity videos on your PC or mobile device.
Do you need to record the screen on your PC or mobile device? Maybe you’re a professional who wants to record your on-screen activity for a presentation for work. Maybe you’re a trainer or software developer who needs to create videos that show how a certain app works. Or maybe you’re just an ordinary person who wants to create and share videos of something interesting on your PC or phone.
Windows, Apple’s iOS, and Android don’t officially offer built-in tools to record your screen. However, there are several tools that can perform such an action.
Record your screen in Windows
There are many screen capture programs for Windows. Some are free, others are free trials and many will pay a fee. Consider a free tool that works well.
Free screen capture
This screen recording utility is easy to use and offers all the basic features and options for recording your screen. You can choose to record an entire screen, window, or a specific area of your choice using a mouse. You can use hotkeys to start, pause, and stop recording. The program can pick up your voice or other sounds from your PC’s microphone. You can then save the video as an AVI or Windows WMV file. And above all, the program is free for personal and professional use. All you need to do is request a registration number and you’re ready.
Record the screen on your iPhone or iPad
Recording screens on iPhones or iPads are more complicated because Apple doesn’t offer any screen recording tools, either naturally or through the App Store. Cracking your device will give you access to some screen capture programs, but don’t. Instead, you can install a mirror program on your PC and then tap Apple’s AirPlay feature to display your iOS device’s screen on your PC. Then just use Free Screen Capturer to record your screen.
We will use a free mirroring program called LonelyScreen. Visit the LonelyScreen Downloads page to download the software. Install the software and then plug your iOS device into your PC. Launch the LonelyScreen program.
Swipe up to the bottom of the screen on your iOS device to open Control Center. Tap the entry for AirPlay. You’ll see LonelyScreen listed as an option. Tap it, and then tap the Mirroring command to turn it on. You’ll now see your iOS screen displayed in the LonelyScreen window.
To record a screen, launch Free Screen Capture and choose the option to capture an area. Use your mouse to draw an area around your iOS device screen in the LonelyScreen window. You can then use your iOS device and the activity on your screen will be recorded with a free screen capturer.
Record the screen on your Android device
Taking screenshots on your Android device is a similar process only with different software. Plug your Android device into your computer.
To take a screenshot, we must turn on a feature for developers called USB Debugging. Open the Settings menu on your Android device, tap the About option in the System section, and then tap the option for Build Number seven times. Go back to the Settings menu and you’ll now see the settings for the Developer option in the System section. Tap Developer options settings, and then tap the USB troubleshooting settings to turn it on.
Download and install the Google Chrome browser if you don’t already have one. Using Chrome, download a program called Vysor from Google’s online Chrome store. Click the Vysor icon on Google Chrome’s app screen to download it. At the Vysor window, click the Find Device button. Your Android device will pop up. Click it to bookmark and then click the Select button.
Your Android device will flash a message asking if you want to allow USB debugging. Tap OK. You’ll see a message that says Vysor is connected. Click OK, or Never display this message again if you want to ignore this message in the future. You’ll now see your Android device screen displayed in the Vysor window.
To record a screen, launch Free Screen Capture and choose the option to capture an area. Use your mouse to draw an area around your Android device screen in the Vysor window. You can then use your Android device and the activity on your screen will be recorded in files created by Free Screen Capturer.
